U2 play mini-set at film festival

U2 launched their new film 'U2 3D' at the Cannes Film Festival last night (May 19).

The band played a short set at the French event to ahead of the premiere of the road film shot which was on the South American leg of their Vertigo Tour.

Bono and co performed 'Vertigo' and 'Where The Streets Have No Name' at the red carpet entrance to the Grand Theatre Lumiere, reports Reuters.

The film uses new three dimensional camera technology that allows footage to get closer to the performers onstage than has been possible on previous live films.

The Cannes audience witnessed a 55 minute preview of the film, ahead of the full version (expected to be 90 minutes) which will be released internationally in around 1000 3D equipped cinemas.

The film is not the only rock n roll movie to make an impact at this year's film festival.

As previously reported, Joy Division film 'Control' got its premiere at Cannes on Thursday (May 17).
The Coral play intimate London show

The Coral performed a set comprised of both new tracks and old favourites to a crowd of around 250 competition winners at the intimate 100 Club in London tonight (August 6).

The show was the first of radio station XFM's 10th anniversary celebration gigs taking place throughout London.

The series will see the likes of Razorlight, The Kooks, Kaiser Chiefs and Kate Nash playing small shows across the capital throughout the rest of the year.

Singer James Skelly and his band opened their set with 'Goodbye'. They continued with old favourites such as 'Simon Diamond', the little-aired 'I Remember When' and 'Dreaming Of You'. The latter song inspired a mini-mosh pit in the small venue.

The band also performed songs from their new album, 'Roots And Echoes', including 'Jacqueline', 'Who's Gonna Find Me' and 'In The Rain'.

During 'She Sings In The Mourning' guitarist Bill Ryder Jones played his guitar using a violin bow.

Following the encore-less show, The Coral were whisked away to a secret location in London for their after-party, which featured a DJ set from 1965 Records and The View cohort James Endeacott.
